You Say Goodbye & I Say Hello: Red Wings Adding, Subtracting From Roster
With Johan Franzen set to return to the Red Wings roster on February 5th, and Andreas Lilja sometime in the near future, Detroit will be forced to squeeze themselves underneath the cap ceiling. Tomas Holmstrom returned Tuesday night and had no problem being inserted into the roster with Justin Abdelkader being sent to Detroit’s AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids. However, with the return of Franzen,...

The Olympic-NHL Partnership

The Olympic-NHL Partnership
For any NHL player lucky enough to be picked for his respective Olympic team it is considered a great honor, one that is not to be turned down.  Imagine the uproar if Sidney Crosby, Henrik Zetterberg, or Alexander Ovechkin decided they would rather have the time off.  I believe traveling home would become rather unpleasant. Therefore the matter is considered settled, they are playing and barring...

Detroit Character Shines Through Piling Injuries

Detroit Character Shines Through Piling Injuries
“Take these broken wings…and learn to fly again” That’s right. From deep within the hellish bowels of 80s pop rock, I whipped out Mr. Mister. And my oh my are the Wings ever breaking. To go along with recently damaged Jonathan Ericsson and Darren Helm, Henrik Zetterberg suffered a separated shoulder Thursday night in a 3-0 victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Mattias Ohlund caught...

League Fails To Bring Down Hammer As Kronwall To Miss 6-8 Weeks

League Fails To Bring Down Hammer As Kronwall To Miss 6-8 Weeks
Nicklas Kronwall as you may have already heard, suffered a grade II MCL sprain against the Montreal Canadiens Saturday night and will miss anywhere from 4-8 weeks. It was announced today Laraque was suspended 5 games. Let me begin by saying, I care not for the history of George Laraque. This is irrelevant to me and should be to the league as well. This is a dirty, intentional hit, and 5 games is not...

Wings Snag Miller Off Of Waivers

Wings Snag Miller Off Of Waivers
The Red Wings claimed forward Drew Miller from the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday, in a move that comes as a slight surprise to some. This move, as indirect as it seems, was perhaps made in light of the Jason Williams injury that will see the forward miss roughly 2 months after breaking his leg. Jason Williams, a right handed shot, plays a role very similar to that of Mikael Samuelsson who played...

Jimmy Howard Comes Up Huge For Detroit

Jimmy Howard Comes Up Huge For Detroit
The Detroit Red Wings kicked, clawed, struggled and somehow found a way to put 2 goals into Roberto Luongo’s net. As it turned out, for the second night in a row, this was enough for a victory. Both without Chris Osgood. Jimmy Howard, after a solid night against Columbus, was outstanding back home in Detroit against a rested and determined Vancouver team. The first and half of the third belonged...

ONE MONTH IN, NHL PROVIDES PLENTY OF SURPRISES

ONE MONTH IN, NHL PROVIDES PLENTY OF SURPRISES
If the first month of the 2009-10 NHL season has taught hockey fans anything, it’s to forget expectations. The standings have seemingly flip-flopped from last year, as several teams that were considered DOA have instead been stubborn SOBs. And while there is an eastern European atop the scoring leader chart, it’s not the one everyone would expect. Among the early surprises thus far: •...

OCTOBER IS OVER: FULL SPEED AHEAD FOR DETROIT

Nov 4th, 2009 10:47 am Posted By Rob Cigan

OCTOBER IS OVER: FULL SPEED AHEAD FOR DETROIT
October is a foul month. A most unwelcome climate change rears again its ugly head, and the constant reminders that “Christmas is coming” serve only as a stressful daily pinprick to the soul. With all the calm and poise of a hostage reading a ransom note, we struggle to remain at ease. For hockey fans, let me tell you, we are the true witnesses of the falling sky. Most of our panic buttons by...
